Proofreading & copyediting

A polish for peace of mind.

Our forensic proofreading and copyediting services are relied upon by businesses in all sectors who need to refine important reports, proposals and other documents before sending, publishing and printing.

We can also formalise, develop and refine house style guidelines, promoting a consistent ‘one brand voice’ across your comms.

Documents supplied in MS Word will be returned with full tracked changes. We can also proof PDFs, PPTs etc., but please be aware of the limited functionality when proofing in these programmes.

What’s the difference between copyediting and proofreading?

I’ve listed it out below, and a combination of the two (proof-editing) is also available.

Copyediting:
● Understanding: use of plain English to ensure a clear message with no ambiguity, rewriting where needed.
● Clarity: syntax, spelling, grammar, appropriate word usage, vocabulary choice that avoids jargon and clichés, punctuation.
● Queries: anything that seems to be an error, including misspelled names, misused words, numbers that don’t add up, contradictory statements, incomplete references.
● Consistency of layout: treatment of headings, notes, illustrations and references, and ensuring captions fit the images.

Proofreading:

● Language: spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, use of tense, autocorrect errors. No rewriting will take place.
● Consistency: within headings and sub heads, date formats, hyphens, capital letters.
● Layout: functioning URL and hyperlinks, line spacing, image captions, numbering.
● Typography: spacing inconsistencies, font size, font colour, use of bold and italics.

Please note that 100% perfection can never be promised when it comes to proofreading, but that's always what we aim for.

“The Profound team is efficient and clear in communication over email and when providing comments on our work. You turn things around in a short timeframe and I am grateful for your flexible approach and way of working, this all helps us immensely. I have also appreciated the questions from the team to help us clarify and distil style elements for our materials.”
