Why you should delete your content… right now

August 19, 2022

Google has released details of its ‘helpful content upgrade‘, and every business with a website should be sitting up and paying attention.

It’s great news for quality. Raising the standard of content across the web, and making it helpful, engaging and informative is something we believe wholeheartedly in.

As content creators, we tell, we sell and we inform. The more helpful and people-first our content is, the better it does its job. So we’re very pleased that Google agrees.

Takeaway 1: People-first content, always. Be absolutely sure that any new content you add to your site has been written with people in mind, not machines. Only once it’s created, should you then apply your best practice SEO.

(You don’t need another reason to give AI copy a wide swerve… but here it is anyway).

But don’t stop there! Removal of unhelpful content is just as important…

Takeaway 2: Unhelpful content will be penalised. So it’s about making sure that all new content added to your site is helpful and aimed at people first, and clearly not just written for clicks.

So stop whatever you’re doing, and evaluate your site’s content. Remove anything that is clearly keyword-stuffed, unhelpful or otherwise poorly written. A small amount of good content is far better than a lot of bad content.

Need a hand? As part of our free content audit we will flag any content that we think is working against you – unhelpful or otherwise.

And our content spring clean will make sure your content is beautifully edited, polished and typo-free… with not a digital cobweb in site (because we all know how much Google hates a typo).
